THE LARGE EXHIBITION HALL

17 February – 20 May 2012
Gralglas Dürnau – German Glass Design 1930–1981
Gralglas Dürnau was one of Germany’s leading glassworks, and was known particularly from the 1950s onwards for its high-standard output in glass design. The company’s glass products were of considerable importance in shaping the design profile of the young Federal Republic of Germany. Nordic glass design was an obvious example for design at Gralglas Dürnau especially in the 1950s.

Compiled by the Düsseldorf Art Museum, this exhibition focuses on the utility and ornamental objects that met the company’s design goals. There is also a small selection of products made by the predecessor of Gralglas Dürnau, Gral-Glas-Werkstätten, which operated in Göppingen before the Second World War.

1 June – 23 September 2012
Glass etc.
Many of Finland’s most famous glass designers, including Kaj Franck, Timo Sarpaneva, Nanny Still and Tapio Wirkkala, designed in other areas than glass – while many who worked with other materials also designed glass. At present, fewer and fewer designers specialize in only one material. This exhibition focuses on new work in glass mainly from the period 1990–2011.

The designers featured in the exhibition are mainly chosen on the basis of their work in glass. Also on display is other work in designed by the participants, including textiles, furniture and ceramics.

2 November – 30 December 2012
Ana Thiel – Mexican Glass Art
Ana Thiel is one of Mexico’s most successful and best-known glass artists. A small exhibition of her work was held at the Finnish Glass Museum in 1996. The artist has now compiled a new and extensive exhibition of her work, for display in various European countries through support from the Mexican Ministry of Culture. The Finnish Glass Museum has taken this exhibition into its programme for 2012 in conjunction with the National Week of Mexican Culture, to be held in association with the Embassy of Mexico from 1 to 7 November 2012.
