Gralglas Dürnau 1930–1981- German Glass Design

Gralglas Dürnau was one of Germany’s leading glassworks, and was particularly known from the 1950s onwards for its high-standard glass design. The company’s glass products were of considerable importance in shaping the design profile of the young Federal Republic of Germany. Nordic glass design was an obvious example especially for design at Gralglas Dürnau in the 1950s.

The exhibition gives priority to utility and ornamental objects made by the glassworks that met the design goals of the company. Alongside the best-known collections of utility glassware, the exhibition also features art objects made by Gralglas Dürnau. The considerable importance of designers, especially Hans Theo Baumann, Josef Stadler and Konrad Habermeier, is clearly evident in the exhibition.

The exhibits also include a small sample of the products of the Gral-Glas Werkstätten, the predecessor of Gralglas Dürnau, which operated before the Second World War in Göppingen.

This exhibition was compiled at the Düsseldorf Art Museum, which has collaborated for many years with the Finnish Glass Museum. After the exhibition in Düsseldorf it went to the Neue Sammlung in Munich, from where it will come to Finland.
